Abstract | Later Cambrian trilobite genera Archikainella and Chencunia are respectively based solely on cranidia and pygidia. An articulated exoskeleton found recently from southwestern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, South China reveals that these two genera are congeneric, and Chencunia is a junior synonym of Archikainella. The new finding also indicates that Metaacidaspis is a junior synonym of Archikainella. This new articulated material is assigned to the previously described species Archikainella vomerinus. It represents the earliest known articulated lichakephalid trilobite. A malformed thoracic segment is recognized in this specimen, likely caused by teratological/pathological conditions. |
