In Lebanon and neighbouring countries, the Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary was conventionally located at the boundary between "uppermost Jurassic" limestones, below, and "Neocomian" sandstones, above. A holostratigraphic approach based on micropalaeontology, macropaleontology, sedimentology, and sequence stratigraphy helps to redefine it more accurately. Due to the lack of any evidence for the occurrence of Berriasian strata, the hiatus related to erosion and non-deposition is there assumed to span the Berriasian, and possibly the upper Tithonian and the lower Valanginian. The Salima Formation consists of a lower manly member of Late Jurassic age and an upper oolitic member of Early Cretaceous age. The upper member becomes a formation in its own right and keeps the name Salima. In turn, the lower member represents a new, still unnamed formation. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
